Sopore, June 27 (KNO): After spurt in the number of COVID cases, the lockdown was re-imposed by the authorities in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday.

All the shops and other business establishments remained closed in Sopore markets while the public transport was off the roads today, witnesses told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO)

Police and paramilitary troopers were deployed on the roads, they said, adding that they had sealed all the main roads in several areas of the town. The forces had erected concertina wires on roads to enforce lockdown.

The lockdown was re-imposed after spurt in the number of COVID cases, officials said, adding that the fresh lockdown is aimed to carry out a massive sanitation drive in markets and public places of Sopore town.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, G N Itoo in a statement said that, “In view of yesterday’s 25 positive cases from service providers of Sopore market, it has become exceedingly imperative to go for a massive sanitation drive in whole markets and public places which is not possible while shops are open and vendors are on roads.”

“As agreed by stakeholders and in the larger interest of people, it is hereby ordered that there shall be complete lockdown enforcement in Sopore town from Saturday,” DC said—(KNO)
