Militants strike in Sopore, kill 4 CRPF men

Sopore, April 18 (KNO): Four Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men were killed and one other injured after militants attacked them at Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Saturday evening.

A police official said that militants believed to be two in number, attacked the joint party of CRPF and police at Sopore at around 5:30 pm. “The security forces retaliated but militants managed to flee,” he said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore Javaid Iqbal told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that militants fired indiscriminately at the CRPF men at Ahad Bab crossing Sopore killing four CRPF men on the spot while as one other were critically injured. However, another police official said that another CPRF man succumbed to his injuries taking the total number of causalities to 4.

“A massive search operation was launched soon after the attack in the area to nab the militants,” the SSP said. Police source said and a large area has been cordoned off to trace the militants involved in the act. CRPF spokesman in Srinagar, Pankaj Singh also confirmed the attack. “Three of our men died in the attack,” he said.

He identified the slain CRPF men as Head Constable Rajeev Sharma, Constable Chandrakant Bakhre and Constable Paramar Satpal and those who were injured were identified as Head Constable Biswajeet Ghosh and constable/driver Javed Ahmed of 179 battalion of CRPF—(KNO)
