Agriculture department celebrates ”World Soil Day”

Budgam, 5 December : Today on 5 December, department of agriculture district Budgam celebrated “World Soil Day”. The day is celebrated on 5 December annually in order to raise awareness about importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and to address growing challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness, fighting soil biodiversity losses. The function was attended Chief Agriculture Officer (CAO) Mr. Mohammad Shafi , Syed Gul Ejaz District Agriculture Officer Extension, Dr Anjum Rashid District Agriculture Officer Inputs and various other officers /officials of Agriculture department.

Dr Anjum Rashid District agriculture officer and PhD in soil science said that the day is meant to encourage governments, organizations, communities, and individuals around the world to commit and play a proactively role for improving soil health which is very important for human well being. There are growing soil problems due to population growth, deforestation and horizontal growth in construction ,she added.

Dr Anjum Rashid further added that the the theme for World Soil Day 2020 is “Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity”. This years’ campaign “Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity” urges us to focus our attention on the workers below ground – from tiny bacteria to algee, millipedes to earthworms – all of which contribute to processes that are indispensable to life on Earth.
