BDC Polls: BJP’s 18 key functionaries get security cover

Party nominates poll in charges at block, district level

Srinagar, Sep 24 (KNO): Taking advantage of the prevailing situation in Kashmir and to grab the maximum seats in upcoming Block Development Council (BDC) polls, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated the key functionaries for the smooth conduct of the polls while as 18 party men have been provided security cover.

According to Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the party has mobilized its cadre at a time when the leaders and ground-level workers of major political parties, National Conference, the People’s Democratic Party and some small parties have detained after Centre revoked the special status of the state on August 5.

The party has mobilized it’s cadre in Kashmir to ensure maximum participation in its party favour in the second tier of local government under the Panchayati Raj system.

Manzoor Bhat, Media in charge and IT Cell Kashmir told KNO that security has been given to more 18 party functionaries, who have been assigned the task for BDC elections. The party leaders claim to have more than 1200 panchayat members in Kashmir presently. 

BJP’s J&K Spokesperson and President Panchayat Raj Cell, Kashmir, Altaf Thakur also said the preparations have been made for the polls including the preparation of electoral rolls as it was expected to follow the panchayat polls.

Thakur said BJP was in favour of BDC polls since the first tier of Panchayat elections, but got delayed due to the prevailing situation. The party was expecting to get the maximum seats in the total 316 BDCs of J&K, in which 147 are in Jammu region, 136 in Kashmir and 31 in Ladakh.

NC and PDP had also boycotted the Panchayat polls held in last December, but polls were held amid strong protests by these parties.(KNO)
