Srinagar, June 09 (KNO): In the backdrop of turning girls’ hostels into quarantine centers at Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), the boarders of H2 block on Tuesday alleged that their belongings were ‘stolen’ by the persons accommodated there for isolation.
The students told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that more than 80 persons were accommodated in H2 hostel wherein they kept their personal stuff.
One of the students said, “In the month of March, the hostels were turned into quarantine centers without informing the students even we were not intimated to collect our belongings.”
“A few weeks back, some photos of our broken wardrobes went viral on social media and on informing IUST authorities about the issue, they assured us all our stuff was safe. However, a few days later they called all boarders to collect their belongings on June-05,” the student said.
She also said they were asked to go into the quarantine centers to collect their belongings wherein district administration had kept 80 persons of primary contacts. “Irony is the room in which our belongings were kept was not even sanitized,” they added.
“Our study material and other personal stuff including, certificates, clothes, books and laptops and storage drives were missing. The IUST authorities had kept the belongings of all 300 boarders of both hostels in a one room like dust,” the boarders informed KNO
“One of my friends had been kept her books of all 5 semesters there and couldn’t find it and another friend’s laptop was missing. Our university identity cards and other belongings were also stolen,” another student said.
The students said they are apprehensive about the missing pen-drives wherein they have kept the personal stuff. “Irony is that some students of IUST have even lost eligibility and other certificates,” the students added.
IUST Registrar, Reyaz Rufai told KNO that the hostels of the varsity were taken by the district administration. “We were not given enough time to intimate students to collect their belongings,” he said.
Rufai said that some female boarders informed them about the missing stuff. “Once the situation normalizes, we will see how the IUST administration will compensate them. It is quite clear neither IUST management nor district administration has misplaced the belongings of the boarders,” he added –(KNO)
