Water scarcity triggers protest in Sopore

Sopore, July 02 (KNO): Inhabitants of Neharpora, Ibrahim Colony and Arampora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday staged a protest against the Jal Shakti Department (Public Heath Engineering PHE) for failing to provide adequate water supply to them.

The protesters including men and women raised slogans against the concerned authorities as well as in favour of their demands.

Residents while talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) alleged that the PHE department is ignoring their plights. They added that from past one month, they are getting inadequate water supply while as the department has failed to look into the matter.

Inhabitants said that in absence of water, the womenfolk in the areas is being forced to walk miles to fetch the water to quench the thirsty.

“In last one year, we have been facing water scarcity frequently,” Mohammad Younis, a local resident said.

Sakeena, another local inhabitant told KNO that the department is taking them for granted and are not paying any heed to redress their genuine grievances.

Meanwhile, the protesters appealed to the higher authorities to look into the matter and redress their issues at an earliest.

Moreover, PHE officials from Sopore told KNO that the old supply lines are not in a position to bear additional pressure of water as a result many areas are facing water scarcity.

However, he assured that the demand of people will be redressed soon—(KNO)
